얀 마텔의 소설 『파이 이야기』에는 신은 소개를 받아야 알 수 있다
는 부분이 있는데, 주인공 파이는 입안에 우주가 들어있다는 힌두
교의 신 크리슈나를 어머니에게서 소개받는다. 나는 미국의 슈퍼
마켓에서 Eclipse, Galaxy, Mars, Milky Way, Orbit, Starburst
와 같은 우주 관련 이름을 가진 과자들을 소개받았고, 그것들은
나에게 각기 나름의 우주를 선사했다. 흥미롭게도 이 과자들은
모두 미국의 식품업체 Mars, Incorporated의 제품이다. 이 과자
들의 포장지에 있는 그래픽들을 해체 및 재구성하여, 과자들을 입
안에 넣었을 때 크리슈나의 입속처럼 우주와 같은 무한대의 세계가
펼쳐지는 황홀한 경험을 형상화하였다.
In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, there is a part where God can be known only through introduction by someone. A Hindu god, Krishna, who has the universe in his mouth, was introduced to the main character, Pi, by his mother. The sweets with universe-related names such as Eclipse, Galaxy, Mars, Milky Way, Orbit, and Starburst were introduced to me by supermarkets and convenience stores in the United States, and they all gave me their own universe. Interestingly, these sweets are all produced by an American food company Mars, Incorporated. By disassembling and reconstructing the graphics on the wrappers of these sweets, I visualized the fascinating experience of the infinite universe like Krishna's mouth when the sweets were put into one's mouth.
